Jose Jesus was born on October 18th, 1863 in Malpaso de Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico and his baptism took place there on October 18th, 1863.^1 2

Jose Jesus' father was Jose Lorenzo de Jesus Ortega (Balenzuela) and his mother was Dionicia Mendez.  His paternal grandparents are Maximino Ortega and Maria Petra Balenzuela (Ortega); his maternal grandparents are Gregorio Mendez and Juana Delgado (Mendez). He had three brothers and a sister, named Miguel de Jesus, Jose Remigio, Jose Epigmenio and Ma. Josefa Del Refugio.  He was the second youngest of the five children.
