Jose Remigio was born on October 10th, 1860 in Malpaso de Villanueva, Zacatecas, Mexico and his baptism took place there on October 10th, 1860.¹

Jose Remigio's father was Jose Lorenzo de Jesus Ortega (Balenzuela) and his mother was Dionicia Mendez.  His paternal grandparents are Maximino Ortega and Maria Petra Balenzuela (Ortega); his maternal grandparents are Gregorio Mendez and Juana Delgado (Mendez). He had three brothers and a sister, named Miguel de Jesus, Jose Epigmenio, Jose Jesus and Ma. Josefa Del Refugio.  He was the second oldest of the five children.
