This
Vietnam Veterans Memorial Page is intended to honor those who served in
all branches of the United States Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.
Tribute is paid to all the Vietnam era Veterans who served our country
in our nation's longest war. By honoring these Americans, it is
hoped
that we can separate the warrior from the war, focus on the valor and
sacrifice
of these patriots and give each of them a place in history and in our
hearts.
The veterans that are named on this page are those with whom I had
personal
contact with or they, in some way, had personal contact with someone in
my immediate family. May God bless and keep them. "He which hath no stomach to this fight let him depart. But we in it shall be remembered. We few, we happy few, we band of brothers!! For he today, that sheds his blood with me, shall always be my brother”. Rest in peace brave soldier, you have not been forgotten. (W.Shakespeare) REFLECTIONS FROM THE MOVING WALL". I am a monument to a black period in this countries history. I am the Vietnam Wall composed to two angled granite walls, inscribed with the names of fifty eight thousand, one hundred thirty four American men and women who died in hell (that was Vietnam). Many people come to see me. Strangely, they come mostly in silence; old people, young people, children, mothers, fathers, widows and veterans. All for reasons of their own. They bring gifts, pictures, letters, flowers, poems and cigarettes. The letters speak of grief, loneliness and regret. They ask forgiveness. They are an outpouring of pain. The people softly touch names on my face. They water my grass with tears then they leave in silence and, I hope, in peace. For I am more than two stone walls. I am a thank you from a nation that forgot. I am a long past due apology. I am healing for wounds too long left unattended. I am a tribute paid to fallen warriors. I AM THE VIETNAM WALL. "America has forgotten the wars. Will she remember her warriors"? You may be gone , BUT YOU ARE NOT FORGOTTEN. |

I
didn't know John very well when he lost his life. I had around 90 days
in country at the time.
John was an E-5 but got busted to E-4 for hitting a Captain who was harassing his Vietnamese girlfriend. She worked as a mess hall KP back in the rear. All of this happened when the Unit was in Rach Kien. Seems that the Captain expected the girl to perform certain duties that she didn’t bargain for. John had words with the Captain and they got into a fight. John was appointed Acting Jack on the afternoon of Nov. 13, 1969 so that he could replace my Squad Leader, Sgt. Hacker, for the nights ambush because my Squad Leader was at a Field Sanitation class. John was killed that night by automatic weapons fire to the head and chest. I was one of four who carried his body to the Medivac Chopper. All of us who carried him were members of his squad. He was 20 years old. (Viet Nam Memorial Panel 16W – Line 70) In the photo shown at the right, John (far right) is standing with Sgt. Clifford Deane (left) and Sgt. Smith (center) at the Ben Luc Naval Base. This photo was made available to me by Clifford Deane. |

I first met Robert Kelly at Holy Trinity Catholic School in San Pedro, CA.. I was around 5 or 6 years old and in the first grade (I think). We were in the same grade and classroom. He was invited to my 7th or 8th birthday party and the vision of the toy that he gave me that day as a gift has somehow stood the test of time. (51 years) It was a pistol with rubber darts and it came with a chicken (hen) as a target. When you hit the chicken on a small pad the shape of an egg, the chicken would respond by depositing a ping pong ball out of the back. It wasn't necessarily a technical marvel but it did keep us busy for most of the party. Robert had a sister that I didn't meet until around 1994. Her daughter, Barbara, married my son, David Jr. and it was my daughter-in-law, Barbara, that made this photo of Robert available to me. |
